Since the hotfix of the Catalyst 8.12 driver, owners of a ATI graphic card have to abdicate texture filtering in some games. The Catalyst 9.1 did neither eliminate this bug. So is the final Catalyst 8.12 WHQL currently the last ATI graphic driver, which anisotropic filtering can be applied to every texture with.
A technical staff member of AMD told us on the phone that the bug will be solved in the next Catalyst, Catalyst 9.2, with almost certainty.
The background is that, since the Catalyst 8.12 hotfix, it is no longer possible to toggle anisotropic filtering over the Catalyst driver in DirectX 10 games. It does not matter how the controller is set; in DirectX 10 games it is generally controlled internally by the application. This is a problem in games where anisotropic filtering can not be adjusted over the game menu.
Crysis Warhead is the best-known example here.
